Acne prevention and natural cures

Acne diet

All-fruit Acne diet

To begin with, the patient should take only an 'all-fruit' diet for a week, taking three meals a day, of fresh juicy fruits, such as apples, pears, grapes, grapefruit, pineapples, and peaches. Only unsweetened lemon or plain water, either hot or cold, should be drunk and nothing else.

Well-balanced Acne diet

After the one-week, all-fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet with emphasis on raw foods, especially fresh fruit and vegetables, sprouted seeds, raw nuts, and wholegrain cereals, particularly millet and brown rice. Further short periods of the 'all-fruit' diet for three days or so may be necessary at a monthly interval till the skin's condition improves.

Avoid strong tea/coffee, soft drinks and processed foods

Meats, sugar, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, soft drinks, candies, ice cream, refined and processed foods should be avoided as far as possible.

Other Acne natural treatments

Warm-water enema

During the initial one week 'all-fruit' diet, a warm-water enema should be taken daily to cleanse the bowels. Hot fomentation should be applied locally to open up the pores and to bring out the waste matter. The affected parts should then be rinsed with cold water.

Exposure to sun and air baths

The patient should take sun and air baths by exposing the whole body to the sun and air.

Hot Epsom salts bath

A hot Epsom salts bath twice a week is beneficial in all cases of acne. This bath is prepared by adding 1 ½ kg of Epsom salts to 60 litres of water having a temperature of about 37.8° C. The patient should remain in the bath tub for 25-35 minutes till he sweats freely. After the bath, the patient should cool off gradually.

What are the Causes of Acne - Pimples?

Acne occurs when hair follicles are clogged by dead skin cells. Hair follicles produce an oil called sebum. If this oil builds up in the clogged pore it becomes infected, and the hair follicle becomes inflamed. If the follicle bursts, the infected matter inside the pores spreads across the skin, infecting the surrounding area and creating new pimples.

Acne Vulgaris and Other Types of Acne

Acne vulgaris is the most common form of the condition. "Vulgaris" does not mean "vulgar;" it means "common." It affects approximately 90% of all adolescents, and 50% of adult women. Acne vulgaris is what most people think of when they think of spots and zits. It is a clogging of the hair follicles that leads to unsightly, and sometimes painful, skin lesions and pimples. It ranges in degree from mild to severe and, at its most severe, it can cause scarring.

Many other types of acne exist, however. They're listed below, along with definitions of the different types of pimples and skin lesions they cause:

Acne conglobata : A rare form that usually affects males, acne conglobata covers the back, chest, and buttocks with pustules and nodules, which often connect under the skin. Because of this tendency to connect, severe bacterial infection is possible, as well as extensive scarring. Medical attention is required.

Acne cosmetica : As the name implies, it is triggered by topical make-up. Characterized by small pink bumps, acne cosmetica is usually quite mild, with little chance of scarring.

Acne fulminans : A rare and extreme form of acne conglobata, acne fulminans almost always infects males. Symptoms include a sudden onset of pustules and nodules, infected nodules, fever, joint pain, and possible loss of weight or appetite. Acne fulminans is a serious condition and requires prompt medical attention.

Acne medicamentosa : It is caused by reactions to medicine or drugs. Women often experience acne medicamentosa when starting or ending birth control pills. Steroids and testosterone have also been implicated.

Acne rosacea : It is not true acne, but rather an inflammation of the face, neck or chest that results in red, bumpy, oily skin. Acne rosacea usually appears in people aged 30 to 60. It often begins as a short-term condition that can become chronic and cause facial scarring if not treated. Acne rosacea is often accompanied by acne vulgaris. Comedonal acne : Acne characterized by whiteheads and blackheads, without other forms of skin lesions.

Comedones : Enlarged, plugged hair follicles. If the comedone is under the skin, it's a whitehead. If it breaks the surface of the skin, it's a blackhead.

Cyst : Similar to a pustule, a cyst is an inflamed, pus-filled lesion that goes deep into the skin, and can cause pain and scarring.

Cystic acne : One of the most severe forms of acne, cystic acne occurs when the infected contents of a pustule or pimple erupts beneath the skin, rather than on the surface. The body's natural defenses then try to fight the infection, leading to swelling and pain. Cystic acne often causes facial scarring. While it usually occurs spontaneously, cystic acne can be caused by scratching and picking at pimples. Often accutane comes to rescue in this case.

Macule : A temporary red area that is the result of a healing lesions. When macules are massed in an area they make the skin look an angry red.

Nodule : These are large, solid and often painful skin lesions that are buried deep in the skin layers.

Papules : Small, tender pink bumps on the skin.

Pustules : Also called pimples, pustules are inflamed, pus-filled comedones, often red around their edges.

Prevention and Remedies for Acne

Acne prevention is a bit of a misnomer if it implies there's a cure. There isn't. Acne prevention actually means preventing outbreaks, and there's plenty you can do to avoid the recurring pimple. Outbreak prevention covers a wide range: from the day-to-day preventive measures you can take to the acne products and remedies on the market.

Follow a gentle approach. Wash gently, and dab your skin clean. You're trying to remove excess oil produced by your skin pores; scrubbing hard will actually force the oil and dead skin cells back into the pores. You can use the assorted acne products that clean the skin, but avoid those products that claim to dry out your skin. Your skin needs moisture and, without it, your pores just produce even more oil.

Avoid Hand-to-Hand Combat

It's so tempting to roll up your sleeves and take the battle to the pimple, squeezing it into submission. Trouble is, picking and squeezing zits often leads to more problems: you spread the infection over the surrounding area when the zit bursts, and you can even wind up with scarring. Best to avoid mixing it up with your little pustular foes (even if they are asking for it).

Acne Cure Products

All manner of products are on the market, some of them better than others. You should avoid anything too harsh or invasive (cheap blackhead extractors, for instance). Some treatments claim to work directly on the pimple, but the best products are the ones that treat the entire face. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for their recommendations.

How to Get Rid of Zits Using Over the Counter Products

You've got 'em. You don't want 'em. So how to get rid of zits is the question. The advice on the Symptoms page works well, but what if you want to serve your acne an eviction notice as fast as possible?

Unfortunately, there's no cut and dried answer for how to get rid of zits. A product that leaves one person pimple-free may not have any effect on someone else. You may have to experiment before you find an over-the-counter product that works for you. Mild to moderate acne often responds well to nonprescription products. Severe acne is more likely to respond to prescription medications than nonprescription treatments.

A few cautions when using acne products

Avoid getting the product in your eyes, mouth or inside your nose (ouch!). Don't apply any product to an open wound (that includes any zits you picked at), sunburn or irritated skin. If you develop a rash, unpleasantly dry skin or other side effects, discontinue use and consult your doctor or dermatologist.

Pimple home remedies

Pimple home remedies

People have come up with some pretty inventive home remedies for zits. Some home remedies for pimples have included potatoes, vinegar and lemon juice, toothpaste, garlic, lime juice and basil. Some have claimed that these and other home remedies for pimples have worked for them quite well. In my own experience, no home remedy ever worked. The Regimen, however, keeps me clear.

Aspirin Mask

Aspirin contains BHA (Beta hydroxy acid) which is a powerful defoliant and great at helping unclog pores and clear blemishes. It's recommended that you use the Aspirin mask / scrub once a week.

Step 1: Take 6 - 8 uncoated aspirin tablets in cup or bowl and crush them in to a powder.

Step 2: Add a few drops of warm/hot water, allow vera gel or honey, now stir until you have a thick white paste. You may need to add more water to achieve the right consistency.

Step 3: Spread over your entire face, sit back and relax for 10-15 minutes. You'll know when 15 minutes is up as the mask is likely to start falling off your face.

Step 4: Wash off the mask with warm water and a gentle cleanser, as you wash gently massage, the grains will help exfoliate and reveal softer, glowing skin.

Step 5: Gently pat your face dry.

Hiccups
  • I know it sounds nuts, but that hiccup trick works for me; where you get a tall cup of water, sit it on the table, and drink from the opposite side of the glass. It may have something to do with the way your air passages are as you drink

  • Also for hiccups, try a spoonful of peanut butter

  • (submitted by visitor) The only real hiccup cure is one that treats the hiccups for what they really are. Hiccups are caused by the diaphragm spasming. Taking in as much air as possible, makes the lungs expand and push down on the diaphragm. This stretches the diaphragm out to it original position and shape. Hold the breath as long as possible, just don't pass out, and let it out. Voila', no more hiccups. It works every time. (submitted by visitor)

  • Nails
  • To help dry nail polish quicker, run your fingers under cold water.

  • I have one more to add to your section for nails. If you keep your nailpolish in the fridge, they stay fresher longer and you can keep them longer. (submitted by laura)

  • Sunburn
  • To help the peeling on your face after a sunburn, mix a tablespoon of sugar with a cleansing get

  • When shaving your bikini line, make sure you lather the area with lots of soap before putting on your shaving cream. Go over each area only once to prevent irritation, and when you are finished put deodorant on the just shaven area (be careful to only get it on the skin). Bumps and irritation will be greatly reduced if not completely gone! (submitted by visitor)

  • Headaches
  • Cut a lime in half and rub over forehead and temples.

  • Hangovers
  • Drink a glass of milk before you go out drinking, and a glass of drink before bed; also eat before you go out.

  • Take 2 advil before going out, 2 before bed.

  • Dark Circles
  • Dark circles under eyes - drink lots of water, sleep on 2 pillows, apply cold compresses.

  • Sleep on several pillows to rid puffy eyes.

  • Acne

Take a cotton ball or cotton square or round, and soak it in the salty water for about 30 seconds, moving it around in the water getting it good and salty. Take it out and squeeze out the water. Apply the cotton ball to pimple, and push down. if it doesn't tingle, put more salt on the cotton ball. When it does tingle, push down for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, DO NOT WASH OFF THE SALT THAT STAYS ON YOUR FACE!!! Take Some honey and drop it on a Q-tip. Apply honey to pimple and leave on for 15 mintes. After 15 min is up, rinse off with water. Then apply a dab of toothpaste and leave overnight... That's it!!! Odd i know, but i works!! (submitted by Tiffany R)

  • Acne or Pimples Home Remedy

For teenagers acne is a curse, for an adult it’s an unwanted surprise. Some experts believe you can blame the genes (yes, your parents) because it’s inherited.

Others blame puberty hormones. During adolescence, hormone changes will enlarge the oil glands and encourage them to produce more oil. This increase in oil will generate more skin cells that stick to each other, resulting in clogged pores.

In adults it can be that thick, oily makeup that you are using that blocks the pores. Stress, and premenstrual will also change the hormones level leading to the same problem. Certain drugs could also induce acne as a side effect.

Apart from those reasons, your food could also be the culprit. Proof? Canadian Inuit, prior to 1950 had no incidence of acne (yes, what a great life). Later, when modern foods were introduced to their diets, acne became common.

    What Should You Do ?

    1) Leave it alone
Many people will rub, press or squeeze their pimples. Don’t! When you do this, you risk spreading the bacteria to other areas.

    2) Don’t rest your chin on your hands
Please try to not constantly touch the face. This causes trauma to the acne. When this happen it could go berserk, just like human under pressure.

    3) Watch your food
For some people coffee, ice cream, nuts or greasy food (pronounced as: fast food) would not do much harm to the face. For others it may encourage acne. So, watch what you eat. Juices and vegetables are recommended. Milk and other dairy products should be reduced. Please forgo anything with a lot of sugar in it. Yes! Coke and other soft drinks could make your acne worse.

    4) Watch out for oily products
Boys should see if their oily hair cream is a culprit. Girls should concentrate more on their makeup, moisturizers and other skin care products. If these products are oil based, it would just make the problem worse. Use water based products instead.

    5) Home remedies?
Lemon juice diluted in water can be applied externally because of its antiseptic quality. Tea Tree oil can also be applied directly to infected pores or used as soap. Try grapefruit juices too.

    6) Wash your face, properly.
Use a mild soap. Wash once or twice a day and rub lightly with your fingertips and warm water. Do not use anything rough on the pimples, your skin is already irritated by the acne.

    7) Drink a lot of water
Drink enough water. Most people believe it should be 6 to 8 glasses. At Oohoi we think it does not matter. Some people have to take more because of the climate, others may take less. Just follow your body. The rule is to drink when you feel thirsty. That is the nature's way of telling you that you need more drink. It's that simple. Also, given the fact that our tap water is not so great, with all the unwanted chemicals in it, fresh fruit juices are definitely better.

    8) Hot showers anyone?
Do you regularly take hot showers? Stop for a while and observe the difference. The habit of hot showers could upset skin function and leads to poor blood circulation and congestion. Some experts believe as simple as it may seem, hot showers could make the problem serious.

    9) Check your hair
Make sure your scalp is free of dandruff. If the hairs are oily and you have scalp problem, treat those along with acne. Try to make sure your hair do not touch your skin because instead of only being annoying it could also make your acne worse. Dandruff is a skin problem that is closely related with acne.

    10) Finally, see your doctor
When acne gets to the point that it bothers you a lot, go and see a doctor. The effect of acne for teenagers is so severe some don’t even want to go out of their house. So if that is the case, seek help from a doctor.
